Around 11 million people in the UK are currently registered as disabled.
1 in 4 customers in the UK is disabled or close to someone who has a disability.
Disabled people spend around £45 to 50 billion each year – that’s 10% of the UK’s total annual retail spend.
The Law
The Disability Discrimination Act of 1995 protects people who have disabilities from discrimination.
The Act defines a disability as:
1. Anyone with a physical or mental impairment, which has an adverse effect on their ability to carry out day to day activities.
2. The adverse effect is considered to be long term; it lasts longer than a period of a year, or for the rest of their life.
